According to the US IFI Claims Patent Service, among the technology enterprises which had obtained more than 50 patents in the US in 2004, 3 are from Taiwan and rank in the top ten in terms of growth rate of total patent number. The 3 enterprises are Nanya Technology Corporation, manufacturer of dynamic random access memory (DRAM), VIA Technologies Inc., chip manufacturer, and AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), LCD manufacturer, respectively.

Nanya obtained 100 patents in the US in 2004, having a growth of 284% and heading the 2004 growth rate list. Also, its total patent number soars to 167th spot in 2004 from 2003’s 700th. Likewise, VIA obtained 116 patents in the US and thus resulted in a growth rate of 123% and also a move up to 146th position in 2004 from 349th last year in the list of total patent number. Not letting Nanya and VIA monopolize such an honor, AUO obtained 79 patents in the US with a growth rate of 98% and its total patent number jumps to 220th in 2004 from 483rd in 2003.

EE Times reports that other than the aforesaid 3 enterprises, there are other 3 enterprises from Taiwan which always remain in the top 100 in the total patent number in the US—they are Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limit (TSMC), the wafer foundry, Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd., the lead in electronics manufacturing, and Industrial Technology Research Institute. This achievement represents Taiwan technology corporations’ growing sense in patent and the significant effects brought by patents on the fierce competition in the international market. (2005.5)
