Taiwan Beer’s Mainland Landing Plan Got Boycotted; Plans to a File Protest with the WTO; Taiwanese Markets Open to Chinese Beer but China Reviews Taiwanese Beer Trademarks with Political Motivation.

E040624Z2 Apr. 2004(E56)

Taiwan has opened up its market to 13 brands of beers from Mainland China, but the mainland keeps procrastinating in its review of Taiwan Beer’s trademark. This delay has created uncertainties for the launch of Taiwan Beer in the Chinese market. This act conducted by the mainland violates the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) rule of “National Treatment”. Apparently, Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation (TTL) is considering filing a protest through the government with the WTO, if the problem cannot be solved.

TTL believes that the outcome of the presidential election and the appearance of the name “Taiwan” on Taiwan Beer’s brand name have had a strong impact on Chinese trademark authorities who have been deliberately neglecting the trademark review. (2004.06)
