The U.S. Urges Further Revisions for Copyright Laws; Matters on the Removal from the 301 Watch List.

Whether Taiwan can be removed from the 301 Watch List is all pending the implementation of the “Copyright Law” amendment. The American Chamber of Commerce in Taipei stated that this was the major point they received from U.S. government officials on their first visit during the “2004 Washington, DC Doorknock Trip.”

The American Chamber of Commerce alleges that the U.S. government considers that the “Copyright Law” amended last year in Taiwan, is in need of further revision to make up for the inadequacy that arose from the deleted draft of the Executive Yuan version in the “Copyright Law” that was enacted. According to a statement U.S. government officials made, it is to be anticipated that Taiwan will be removed from the Priority Watch List as long as the Executive Yuan’s version can be passed intact.

In addition to the “Copyright Law”, they also had a discussion and focused on the difficulties “transnational research-based multinational pharmaceutical corporations” faced in Taiwan’s market. Topics included lack of protection for the exclusive right for data, the inequitable pricing policy, and barriers to market access for innovative products. (2004.06)
