Intellectual Property Office Sets Up Principles of Application for Certification Marks of Geographical Indications.

Ever since the amendment of the Trademark Law last year (2003), toponyms, geographical range an indication may be used as certification marks. In order to clearly restrict the scope of application, Intellectual Property Office has hereby stipulated principles of application for certification marks of geographical indications, which will be put into practice immediately.

After joining the World Trade Organization (WTO), to implement TRIPS pact in regard to the protection of geographical indications and enhance the protection mechanism of our geographical indications, the Trademark Law Article 72 was amended last year. Those who would like to certify merchandise, or the characteristics, quality, density and place of origin of the services or other items with special marks shall register them as certification marks.
