E030408X2 May. 2003(E44)

In virtue of exchange of trademarks, Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation eventually succeeded in acquiring the trademark right for Long-Life cigarettes in mainland China.  Accordingly, the import of Long-Life cigarettes to the market of mainland China will be allowed lawfully.  Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation released the trademark right for Chinese tobacco they hold in Taiwan as give-and-back conditions and thereby saved the state treasury a budget of NT$30,000,000.

Given that Taiwan’s famous Long-Life logo has already been registered by China Xunyang Tobacco and Liquor Group in mainland China few years ago, Long-Life cigarettes were banned from being imported to mainland China lawfully.  Fortunately, Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation has already marketed Chinese Tobacco and also registered its logo in Taiwan.  Therefore, the first batch of Chinese Tobacco under the China renowned cigarettes brand that has strove to develop its market in Taiwan for recent years, amounting to more than NT$50,000,000, as imported by its agent were retained by Customs preliminarily.

The both parties have concluded preliminary give-and-back conditions yesterday.  Under the conditions, Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation retrieves the trademark right for Long-Life cigarettes in mainland China free of charge and the Chinese Tobacco can be imported to Taiwan lawfully.
