Japan’s N.E.G. Invests NT 3 Billions to Set Up a TFT Glass Substrate Factory in Taiwan

   The world’s 4th largest TFT-LCD glass substrate manufacturer N.E.G., based on it’s optimistic outlook on the potential economy of scale in LCD and glass substrate in Taiwan, plans for the first time to invest NT 3 billions to establish an N.E.G. Taiwan. Initially NT 643 millions will be invested at the end of the year to build a factory in the Chungkang District, with an estimated year-end production worth NT 2.2 billions. The Chungkang Economic Processing Zone pointed out that this is the third manufacturer, after American manufacturer Corning and Japanese manufacturer Asahi, to set up a glass substrate factory in Taiwan.

   Currently the worldwide TFT glass substrate market is approximately 2.6 million square meters, of which N.E.G. holds 15 to 20 percent of the market share. The overseas bases of N.E.G. Japan can now be found in the U.S., Korea, India, Mainland China and Mexico. The glass substrates produced by N.E.G. Taiwan will be mainly used to supply the local market.
