In order to protect the research and development achievements in Taiwan, during a conference of finance and economics yesterday, the Executive Yuan decided that as soon as the patented companies which are exploring overseas markets are inappropriately accused of patent right infringement, the government will back them up.  In the initial planning, the government will appropriate the China-America Economic Development Fund (中美基金) as the security for providing the companies with a loan of any lawsuit fees arising from the competitors’ inappropriate accusations.

The deputy chairman He Mei Yue of the Council for Economic Planning and Development conveyed that in the past few years Taiwan industry policies have been focused on encouraging R&D and strengthening the intensity of knowledge. After having spent a lot of money, effort and time on the researches, many manufacturers finally obtain a patent; however, when expanding international markets, the manufacturers often run into patent right lawsuits filed by their competitors concerning. For example, when United Microelectronics Corp. developed 486 CPU’s, they were immediately hit with lawsuits filed by Intel Corporation for patent right infringement. Also, American competitors have also stopped the computer chip sets developed by VIA Technologies, Inc from selling in America as well as overseas by invalidating VIA Technology Inc.’s patent right infringement.
