Ministry of Justice is facilitating numerous meetings dedicated to initiate a major amendment of Lawyer Law in the latest decade. It is acknowledged that this amendment will be centering on relaxing constraints on transforming law firms to corporations, and limiting their liabilities. Further, associations and organizations of lawyers, the training and discipline systems, investigation right, public welfare and advertisement, and relaxing constraints on the legal practices of foreign attorneys in Taiwan shall also be further amended.

Meanwhile, Chen Chuan Yue (陳傳岳), the new director of the Taiwan Bar Association also commented in an interview that, the duty of the association in the future is to concentrate on three essential points: to further exercise the faculty of the lawyers profession, enhance the status of lawyers, solidify the lawyer system and strengthen the organization of lawyers, and more importantly, to advance the lawyer’s globalization. In order to minimize the risk of operation, effort will be taken into an establishment of the compulsory lawyer’s insurance.

According to the statistics of the Non-Life Insurance Association of the Taiwan, only two Lawyer’s Liability Insurance Policies were sold last year, suggesting a great potential in this underdeveloped market. (2003.11)
