Special police force to be established for the protection of IPRs

To put into practice the goal of "IP Protection & Action Year", Premier Yu Shyi-kun yesterday (Mar. 16) at a social security beef-up meeting instructed the Ministry of the Interior to discuss establishment of a special police force for the protection of IPRs and to assign preventive actions on a per task basis before such police force is established. 

 

Premier Yu emphasized that the US has announced that the results of the protection of IPRs in each country will be a focus on the annual review of the "Special 301 for 2002", which will be disclosed in April 2002.  It will not only have an impact on our economic development, but also hold a special meaning to our accession to the WTO for the first year.  Therefore, Premier Yu instructed the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Government Information Office to publish news on prevention results in due course.

 At the said meeting, the representative from the Ministry of Justice reported on the main points of the prevention plan for the past five weeks, including raiding on illegal optical disk factories, in-depth tracking major counterfeit dealers and transnational consortiums, searching into the night markets, Kuang Hwa Market, and places rift with pirated copies, investigating into counterfeiting acts over Internet, and prohibiting counterfeit products from export or import via cooperation with customs and border regulations.  The totality of the value of seized counterfeit products exceeds NT$1.452b, grew by 91% relatively to correspondent period last year.  In addition to raiding night markets and markets selling counterfeit products, the MOJ has named next focus of IPRs protection work, i.e. promoting for the instillation of correct concepts of IPRs into enterprises and organizations.. Source: Liberty Times 03/17/2002    Translated by Jem Chung
