Value of orders placed by Sony in Taiwan this year will amount to 75 billion and become double next year

The officials of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (“MOEA”) indicated that the amount of purchase made by Sony in Taiwan in 2002 will be 75 billion, and Sony is certainly the head of Japanese manufacturers who make purchases in Taiwan.  In 2003, Sony’s amount of purchase will become double and Sony is scheduled to broaden the scale between 120 billion and 150 billion.  Among such amount of purchase, the value for PS2 reaches 70 billion. Sony will also set up an “IC R&D Headquarters” in Taiwan.

 

Sony has not only set up an R&D headquarters for creation of information products in Taiwan, but has planned to further file an application with the MOEA this year for establishment of the “IC R&D Headquarters” to combine the production capability of Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturers with their capability of designing IC.  In the future, Sony expects to purchase semiconductor products with value of 1 billion US Dollars.

 

The MOEA official revealed that Sony will be engaged in the area of electronic banks in Taiwan.  EDY, a Japanese electronic bank and Sony’s affiliate is planning to cooperate with China steel, Uni-President Group and China Trust, etc. to set up an electronic bank in Taiwan in a manner of a joint venture. It is expected that such electronic bank will be established in the end of this year and the scale of investment is likely to reach 20 billion uppermost.
