Suspected of monopolizing market, Microsoft requested for administrative settlement with FTC

E021017X6 Nov. 2002(E39)

Huang Tzong-leh, Chairperson of the Fair Trade Commission, Executive Yuan, indicated on Oct. 16 that Microsoft has verbally requested for an administrative settlement.  The investigation on Microsoft Taiwan Corporation will be suspended once the FTC has examined and approved its improvement proposal.

In the event that the FTC cannot reach a certain conclusion after having ex officio investigated a complaint over the facts or legal relationship on which the administration punishment is based, it may, according to its Principle of Handling Concluding Administrative Settlement Agreement, settle with the party being complained by an administrative agreement in place of administrative punishment, so as to effectively fulfill its administration purpose and settle the dispute.

After receiving a complaint accusing Microsoft Taiwan of manipulating its dominant market power to monopolize computer operating system market in last May, the FTC soon formed an investigation team tasked to investigate whether Microsoft has exploited its dominant status to fix-pricing, or influenced the market with its economic strength and etc.
