National technology project; NT$30 billion to be invested on R&D of nanotechnology and system-on-chip

E021106Y5 Dec. 2002(E40)

The Executive Yuan announced on Nov. 5 that the government is to allocate more than NT$30 billion to fund the research and development of nanotechnology and system-on-chip technology, with a view to enabling Taiwan to become the world leader in nanotechnology industry and the global center for system-on-chip design within three to six years.

The 2-phased nano project will last six years and require a fund of NT 23.1 billion and 92 million.  The basic of this project is to nurture talents and build up core facilities, with the higher goal of pursuing "outstanding academic research" and "industrialization of nanotechnology" in the hope that we may turn into one of world's leaders in nanotechnology industrialization within five to six years.

The National System-on-Chip Technology Project, as co-planned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Education, will require a fund of NT$7,666 million in the first phase starting from '03 to '06.  The National System-on-Chip Technology Project is aimed to help customers world-wide quickly obtain various silicon intellectual property (SIP) and electronic design automation tools, and to roll out new products.  Further, with the world's most advanced service ranging from process technology, mask, wafer OEM to packaging and test, all just close at hand, it is expected to create a world-class design environment rich in SIP, and thus reduce the time normally required for developing a new product by half.
