Taiwan Ranked No. 4 in 2006 on Success in Obtaining US Patents.

 According to the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, Executive Yuan, the US is the third largest market to Taiwan and Taiwan is the eighth largest importer to the US.  In pursuit of protection of R&D achievements and development of patent mapping, Taiwanese innovation holders have taken initiative in seeking US patent on their innovations.  A total of 6,360 US patents were issued to Taiwanese applicants in 2006, with a 1,242 increase from 2005.  In terms of the total number of US patents obtained, Taiwan is still in the No. 4 place.

 According to the statistics of the USPTO, a total of 196,436 US patents were granted in 2006, representing an increase of 38,695 over the number in 2005.  173,771 of the patents were issued on high-end inventions, representing a 29,965 increase from the number in 2005.

 A total of 89,823 US patents were issued to US applicants in 2006, representing a 15,186 increase from 2005, seating the US still in the first place on total number of grants of US patents for 2006 followed by Japan with a total of 36,807 US patents issued to its nationals, representing an increase of 6,466 from the previous year.  Germany was in the third place winning a total of 10,005 US patents with a 994 increase from the previous year.  US patents issued to nationals from these three countries combined account for approximately 80% of the total number of US patents issued in 2006.

 A total of 6,360 inventions patents were issued to Taiwanese applicants in 2006 ranking Taiwan in the fourth place in the year followed by South Korea (5,908)  and representing an increase of 1,556 from the previous year.  UK, Canada, France, Italy and Australia took the No. 6 to No. 10 places respectively.  (2007.7)
