Maestro Narcissus Quagliata is negotiating the royalties with Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corporation (“KRT Co.”) on the Dome of Light, the glazed work he created for the Formosa Boulevard Station of the Kaohsiung Rapid Transit System (KRT) noted as the world’s largest cylinder station structure.  The station is also where the red line and the orange line of the KRT meet.  The Dome of Light with 30M in diameter and made of a total of 660M2 of glazed glass is the world’s largest piece of work of its kind followed by the work built for the Roman church in 2000 created also by Maestro Quagliata himself.  The fabrication was worked by Derix, a German workshop with a total of 4,500 pieces of glasses to recount the history of Taiwan’s strive for democracy.  The artwork of the Dome of Light is composed of four parts: water, earth, light and fire representing birth, growth, glory and destruction.

The KRT orange line was commissioned at the end of August 2008.  The Dome of Light is expected to attract tourists and quite a few local wedding photo studios are lining up to register for scheduled on-location photo-shooting for their clients.  KRT Co. has developed various theme souvenirs on the work and is studying the feasibility of introducing paid in-depth tour of the station.  Nevertheless, the intellectual property issue must be taken case of in the first place.  KRT Co. is the proprietary owner of the physical piece of the artwork but it does not hold the copyright.  KRT Co. must obtain the artist’s prior consent to commence any commercial exploitation of the work or risk being held liable for copyright infringement.

There is high hope for the masterpiece of Maestro Quagliata to place Kaohsiung in spotlight of praise and admiration internationally and KRT Co.’s well-planned exploitation of the work with due authorization a commercial PR success.  (2008.8)
