To grasp the new opportunities stimulated by the post-ECFA period, Taiwan and Japan will work with each other to build the “Global Innovation Corridor”!

Mr. Yin Qi-Ming, the Minister without Portfolio of Executive Yuan, led a delegation to Japan for investment promotion on 3 October 2010, as Executive Yuan scheduled to utilize the R&D ability of Japan and create a partnership with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of Japan for new business model and development of new products for launching into emerging markets including Mainland China.

Mr. Yin Qi-Ming led the delegate to visit Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kitakyushu City Government, and industries including green energy, digital contents and critical electronic spare parts, and semi-conductor (among others).  Reportedly, our Government preliminarily selected 40 Japanese enterprises located in the territory of Kansai, e.g. Osaka, Kyushu and Kyoto, for investment promotion.  According to the Government officer, the Japanese SMEs owned powerful R&D ability, therefore working with Japan would be very helpful in strengthening the connection of industry chains.  For the time being, the Government selects to work with Japan in five major industries including energy, precision machinery, material, semi-conductor ICT and biotechnology.

Following the sharp appreciation of Japanese Yen, Japanese manufacturers equipped with technology are facing difficulty in commercializing their products or striving for global markets.  Yin Qi-Ming indicated that Japanese enterprises consider working with Taiwan to be their best choice for entering into the domestic Mainland China market valuing over ten trillions RMB.

By utilizing Japan’s R&D ability and integrating Taiwan’s strength in commercialization and innovation ability, Taiwan and Japan cooperate with each other can create a new business model for marketing innovation in emerging markets including Mainland China and Southeast Asia.  The integration of tri-regional strengths, collaborative R&D, collaborative innovation, integration of emerging markets, development of products demanded by emerging markets and creation of partnership constitute the “Global Innovation Corridor” concept.  (2010.10)
