“Made in Taiwan” Labeling Will Become Statutorily Required.

E110111Y2 Feb. 2011(E135)

The amendment to Article 9 of Taiwan Commodity Labeling Act passed its third reading at the Legislative Yuan in January, adding the provisions that products shall be marked “made in Taiwan” if their country of origin is Taiwan.  The Ministry of Economic Affairs will formulate other relevant regulations.

The amendment is proposed to avoid the strong impact that may be caused on MIT products following the flooding of products made in China as a result of the implementation of ECFA.  The statutory requirement of “made in Taiwan” marking will enable consumers to clearly identify and confirm the country of origin of products on market and also encourage them to purchase MIT products.

The statutorily required MIT marking is expected to beat tainted or deadly counterfeit products and also those whose place of origin is unknown.  In addition, the legislator proposing this amendment indicated that next amendment is to include provisions regarding ingredients and origin of raw materials.  (2011.01)
