Among the IEI prize-winning Taiwanese inventions this year is the technology of ultrasonic cold extraction of banana peels, one of the successful results of the R&D efforts made by TCI Co., Ltd.  This technology applied extracts content of banana peels by using special ultrasonic waves, which content may be prepared in combination with other ingredients to make dietary supplement or beverage.  It all began with the simple idea of promoting made-in-Taiwan agricultural products to the world, according to TCI Co., Ltd.  This invention is pending grant of patent in Taiwan IPO.

The interactive water-saving desk plant picture frame, presented by Far East University is a desk plant holder innovated as a picture frame where the picture displayed is a live plant.  According to the director of the Arts & Literature Center of the University, the innovative frame is made of plastic material with a hole on each side leading to a mini reservoir at the bottom where there is placed a ceramic tube.  The plant will be kept moistened by the water in the mini reservoir infiltrated from the capillary holes of the ceramic tube and the mini reservoir needs refilling only once every month.

One of the IEI special prizing wining innovations is the multi-function emergency exit illumination presented by Taipei Chengshih University of Science & Technology.  In addition to a smoke detector, automatic display of the word DANGER in an event of fire and a voice alarm, this innovation features a panoramic video camera which will transmit video to the local fire department for them to get hold of the fire scene to be dealt with.  Asia University took home a gold medal and a special prize on two thoughtful innovations:  an illuminated emergency exit socket and a public toilet paper dispenser.  (2013.04)
