US-Based Google Inc.’s largest data center in Asia-Pacific region launched in Changhua County, Taiwan on December 11, 2013.  Joe Kava, Google’s vice president of data center, also announced in the opening ceremony that the original planned investment in Taiwan data center has been doubled from USD3 million to USD6 million.

According to LIANG Kuo-Hsin, the deputy minister of Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs, Taiwan’s information and communications industry has the ability to make and supply all necessary hardware equipment and technology for cloud computing centers, such as, servers, storage, and energy-saving technologies.  Such sufficient and mature ability has been coupled with the strong government support by promoting and fulfilling relevant projects and plans that would turn Taiwan into an ideal base for data centers.  Google’s investment in this data center will definitely boost development of Taiwan’s local cloud computing industry.  Another promising outcome is that the Google’s close ties and cooperation with domestic information and communications industry will also stimulate R&D investment in local cloud computing sector and hence help create a localized solutions to cloud computing software and hardware problems.

The establishment of Google’s data center in Changhua serves as a momentum for Taiwan’s cloud computing industry.  MOEA will try to seek more foreign investments in local cloud computing technology and facilities and to strengthen the ability of local supply chain by creating close ties and cooperation between foreign and local companies, so as to export Taiwan’s cloud computing technologies.
