Taiwan-USA Industrial Cooperation Intensified in 2013

The MOEA (the Ministry of Economic Affairs) held a committee meeting for “Taiwan-USA Industrial Cooperation Promotion Team” on December 17, 2013 with the Industrial Development Bureau presenting the result of Taiwan-USA industrial cooperation in 2013.  According to relevant statistics, in 2013, there had been a total of 17 cases conducted and completed under Taiwan-USA industrial cooperation, involving 52 patent transactions, 10 cases of investments in the amount of TWD7.145 billion with a potential industrial performance valued more than TWD342.7 billion.

According to the MOEA, Taiwan’s and USA’s industries have been cooperating in a complementary and reciprocal way.  The USA has been a significant source of Taiwan’s foreign investment and technologies.  Likewise, Taiwan has been an important strategic partner to the USA’s industrial supply chain.  In 2012, the USA had been the 3rd largest trading partner, while Taiwan, the 12th of the USA’s.  Moreover, in August 2012, the MOEA established the “Taiwan-USA Industrial Cooperation Promotion Office” for building up a substantial cooperation between the two countries in the designated four major sectors of green energy, biotechnology, intellectual property right, and information and communication driven services, etc.  In 2014, the office will focus its efforts on cloud computing, advanced manufacturing, and industrialization of innovation, etc..

For the 2014 plan, the Industrial Development Bureau will promote industrial cooperation that will actualize industrial performance, attract the USA investment and facilitate technology transfer to our manufacturers and product purchase, promote industrialization of intellectual property right, and also make ties and collaboration between the domestic industries and the USA national laboratories and top universities for creating IPR transactions and combinations, so as to enhance the domestic manufacturers’ IPR mapping.

According to the MOEA, they will, in light of the development of the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (AMP), the National Export Initiative (NEI), and the Startup America Partnership (SAP), utilize Taiwan’s ability in commercialization and predominance of sufficient industry chain and combine the USA’s innovative energy to boost Taiwan-USA cooperation in creative industry and fulfill the goal of industry structure optimization.  (December 2013)
