Since WindowsXP’s recent entry into the market, the Criminal Investigation Bureau yesterday uncovered pirated WindowsXP operating system software for the first time.  In the unprecedentedly large-scale action code-named “Web-scouring operation”, the Criminal Investigation Bureau uncovered 18 unlawful Web sites, 21 suspects, and 50,000 pieces of CDs carrying pirated software worth NT$500 million dollars, including more than one thousand copies of pirated WindowsXP software.  The police expressed that they are going to demonstrate the government’s determination to crack down on pirated CDs by action, so as to protect the international copyright and IPR, and to uphold our country’s image among international community.

The police also discovered that the Web site operators selling illegal software CDs over the Internet have the inclination toward conglomeration, division of expertise as well as a comprehensive use of forged or altered information to conceal their true identities, which has made it more difficult for the police’s preventive work.  Nonetheless, the police will continue their work.
