Taiwanese inventors took home 37 gold, 39 silver, 13 bronze medals, along with 6 special awards in the International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva which has been reckoned as one of the world’s top three international exhibitions of inventions.

The youngest Taiwanese winner is LU Yen-Jung (盧諺融), who won a gold medal for his invention of a blackboard eraser that plays music when in use.  This invention applies resonance effect to the blackboard, with which effect the blackboard is turned into a speaker.  It also has a built-in sensor that would cause automatic playing of music whenever the blackboard eraser is removed.  Another gold-winning innovation, the “Infinity ruler of cutting”, presented by Asia University, combines a ruler and cutter to solve the problem occurring when the cutting length is longer than a ruler.

In addition, the “Replaceable sleeve anchor bolt”, developed by Far East University, solves the irremovability of a screw that has been installed into the wall.  Instead of a traditional screw which consists of a spacer, bolt, nut, and sleeve, a replaceable sleeve anchor bolt can be removed by only a spanner because it is made with a combination of spacer and sleeve by way of welding and stamping.  The invention, titled “Watch my direction”, is a walking stick with a directional indicator installed with infrared and laser lights to project light signals on the ground so that the movement of the disabled person holding the stick can be detected.  It is an invention especially created for the elderly and the disabled so as to help reduce the hazard they may encounter on the street.  Both gold medal and special prize were awarded on the above two inventions.

Other inventions recognized by a special award include the “photo catalytic face-nose mask” that is designed by HSIEH Chin-Hsing of Homeway Technology Co, Ltd. (紅崴科技有限公司) to effectively block and prevent the carcinogen PM2.5, the “non-adhesive powerful hook for use everywhere” jointly created by Taipei Chengshih University of Science and Technology (台北城市大學) and Bestshine Technologies Co., Ltd. (頂新創意科技股份有限公司), based on the atmospheric pressure theory and made from PVC material to carry a maximum weight of 20Kg, the “collagen stimulating and anti-skin ageing Djulis extract as a food supplement” by TCI Co., Ltd. (大江生醫股份有限公司), and also Inmiro Co., Ltd.’s (艾米洛有限公司) “LED mirror system allowing reflexion of light without glare and with adjustable luminosity”.  (April 2014)
