Regulations for Implementing the Protection Act for the Traditional Intellectual Creations of Indigenous Peoples Take Effect

As the world has been attaching importance to the human rights of indigenous peoples in the world, discussions about the expression of traditional cultures and the protection of traditional intellectual creations of indigenous peoples have been taking place among international organizations or institutions.  Likewise, in Taiwan, the Council of Indigenous Peoples promulgated the Regulations for Implementing the Protection Act for the Traditional Intellectual Creations of Indigenous Peoples on January 8, 2015 which contains 38 provisions and has taken effect since March 1, 2015.  

With the implementation of the said Regulations, Taiwan’s indigenous peoples have the right to preserve, protect, administer, and develop their cultural heritage, traditional knowledge and culture.  Also, the said Regulations allows Taiwan’s indigenous peoples to claim their exclusive rights over their intellectual creations, and therefore, benefits indigenous peoples and further protects traditional intellectual creations.  (March 2015)
