Talents from Taiwan won 33 gold medals, 32 silvers, and 7 special awards at the 2015 Invention and New Product Exposition held in Pittsburgh in the US.  All winning submissions shared one thing in common that they all can be applied to daily life and the biotechnical and eco-friendly ones drew very much attention.  Taiwan’s winning inventors and inventions are summarized as follows.

One of the biggest winners this year is a Taiwanese dentist, CHEN Chun-Lung of the American Dental Implant Center, whose “Quick Dental Implant Kit” earned him two golds, two special awards, and a cash prize of USD3,000.  Chen spent 12 years to develop the dental implant surgery technique by inventing a special patented drill, by which doctors can implant one tooth within five minutes.  This technique makes tooth implantation faster than cavity filling and reduces risks and anesthesia dose.  This surgical invention has been approved by the FDA and acquired patents in the US, Taiwan, and China and the reduction thereof will be put on Taiwan market in late 2015.

Another gold winning invention is a biodegradable bonsai container presented by Overseas Chinese University.  This invention combines the eco-friendly technology and patent for both outdoor green fence and indoor aquaponics system, and the bonsai container is made of biodegradable materials.  It can be used both indoors and outdoors and the potted bonsai plants can be transplanted outdoors directly because of its biodegradable materials.

Equally impressive is an anti-theft screw lock for computers co-invented by three teenage siblings and Winstrol Industrial Co., Ltd. (Chinese: 威橋實業股份有限公司).  The anti-theft screw lock for computers has a special design to prevent the host computer shell from being easily dismantled to avoid theft of mainboard or hard disc drive.  The three siblings are the youngest gold winners from Taiwan.

In addition, Taipei Chengshih University of Science and Technology team also won several gold medals by their inventions of the “Best Camping Lights Designed for Outdoor Enthusiasts”, the “Most Convenient Luggage for Travelers”, “Always Sticks Powerful Hook”, “Excellent Live Escape Indicator”, “Carbon-Free Motor Oil”.  Chai Yen-Hsin, the assistant professor of electrical engineering at Taipei Chengshih University of Science and Technology was also recognized by INPEX with a special award for efforts in promoting local invention education.  (June 2015)
