The Ministry of Economic Affairs sent a trade delegation on a visit to the headquarters of eleven companies in the US and Canada to encourage foreign investment with fruitful results that MOEA has inked letters of intent with five among the eleven American companies visited and also facilitated another company to sign a MOU with Taoyuan City Government.  It is estimated and expected that this trip will attract inflow of foreign investment in an amount around TWD11 billion in the next three years.

The trade delegation also held investment seminars in New York and Canada to introduce the significant investment opportunities in Taiwan, which turned out successful as foreign investors from the US and Canada were looking for investment opportunities through business negotiation.  Another successful result is that the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries Promotion Office of MOEA signed a MOU with the MedDev Commercialization Centre of Canada to combine and integrate the biomedical innovative energy of Canada with the excellent manufacturing capacity of Taiwan so as to accelerate the commercialization of biomedical products in Canada.

According to the MOEA, the targets of this trade delegation are divided into two categories.  This first category includes the foreign investors from the dominant industries in their respective regions.  In this regard, the trade delegation approached the foreign investors of the biomedical industry (Pfizer and Pharmascience) and technical service industry (Sidense), as New York is the biomedical hub in the US and Canada is the center of digital content and technical service industries.  The second category covers the foreign investors from major industries.  This year, MOEA has paid special attention on economic development projects that will involve significant investment opportunities, such as equipment industry (Veeco) and materials industry (PraxAir), to target proprietors of key technologies and bolster foreign investment in Taiwan.  (August 2015)
