Thomson Reuters announced the 2015 Top 100 Global Innovators.  Taiwan’s MediaTek Inc. has made its appearance on the Top 100 Global Innovators list for two consecutive years as the only Taiwanese company listed in 2015.

Since its inception in 2011, the Top 100 Global Innovators program has entered into its fifth year.  This program has outperformed the leading financial indices every year and proved that increased R&D funding and innovation protection by patenting result in greater revenue and enhanced regional economic activities.

One of the key findings of the 2015 Global Innovation program is that Asia is still leading the world in innovation with 44 organizations listed.  Among the 44 listed organizations, MediaTek represents Taiwan to make the list, while three companies from South Korea and other 40 Japanese companies are honored with the title of top Global Innovators.

The program honors the 100 most innovative organizations globally based on overall patent volume, patent grant success rate, global reach of the portfolio, and patent influence as evidenced by citation frequency.  Moreover, this 2015 study reveals significant industrial and regional shifts, proving that “survival of the fittest” is now “survival of the broadest” as companies seek to expand their portfolios.  For example, Bayer Pharmaceuticals breaks into the 100 Top Global Innovators list since 2011 because of its expansion into crop science.

The senior vice president of Thomson Reuters Intellectual Property and Science said that innovation requires much more than having a great idea, and true innovation occurs when organizations are able to harness the power of intellectual property rights and commercial insight to turn innovation into reality.  (November 2015)
