Taiwan MOEA signs MOU with Qualcomm for IoT development

On November 7, 2016, Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) and Qualcomm Inc., the world’s leading chip manufacturer for mobile devices, inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) and jointly announced their collaboration in expediting Taiwan’s pace of developing 4G+/5G mobile communication technology and Internet of Things (IoTs).  By execution of the MOU, Qualcomm will set up a new testing laboratory and establish a technical team in Taiwan to directly support the R&D of Taiwan-based internet and communication firms and provide Taiwan’s start-up companies with assistance.  Besides, Qualcomm will assist in the launch of Taiwan’s Internet and communication products and solutions into the international market through Qualcomm’s worldwide technology networks.  

SHEN Rong-Jin, deputy minister of the MOEA indicated that the new accord with Qualcomm will not only enhance Taiwan’s R&D capability with the international technical energy but also accelerate the technical development of 5G, IoTs, and smart city in Taiwan through cooperation of 4G+/5G, and further to make the start-up companies of IoTs more complete and integral.  Moreover, in response to the rising customization demand in the IoT industry and the market of diversified vertical application, Taiwan and Qualcomm will work together to form a strategic alliance through Taiwan’s industrial flexibility, so as to support Taiwan’s innovative start-ups and also expedite the development of IoT industry.  With its investment in Taiwan, Qualcomm serves as a significant partner in Taiwan’s Asian Silicon Valley Development Plan.  (November 2016)
